Desire is a topic that comes up frequently in the spiritual community. Among the plethora of contrasting beliefs around desire, is the belief that “desire is the root of all suffering”. This likely originated as an interpretation of the Four Noble Truths of Buddhism.
Upon accepting this into one own’s belief system, many begin to strive to rid themselves of any desire. But in this scenario, it often goes unrecognized that the desire to be free of desires, is a desire itself!
In this video, spiritual teacher Teal Swan, explores the common question, “is desire the root of suffering?” and provides a well-formed case that it isn’t desire that causes suffering, rather it is how we approach and think about our desires that does.
